Man Utd chief Woodward refused to match Bayern in Renato Sanches auction

Manchester United chief Ed Woodward refused to meet Benfica's asking price for Renato Sanches.

Bayern Munich announced the signing of Sanches this morning.

The 18-year-old today signed a five-year deal to swap Benfica for Munich for £27.5m.

The Red Devils had sent scouts to watch the Portuguese star on numerous occasions - but so did the German side.

And the midfielder was reportedly dazzled by Munich's interest and proposal and could not refuse the offer.

But the route of the problems, it's claimed, was the high price on his head.

Woodward is said to be unsure on paying such a big fee for a relatively unproven player, says the Daily Star.

Rumours suggested the deal could be more than £60m including add-ons, a price that was too steep for the United executive vice-chairman.
