Man Utd captain Maguire gives first interview on arrest: I feared for my life

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has said he feared for his life during an incident with police on the Greek island of Mykonos.

Maguire was handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence after being found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery in a Greek court on Tuesday.

However, the 27-year-old has successfully appealed the verdict and re-trial will now take place.

Speaking to the BBC, his first interview since the incident, Maguire was on the verge of tears when explaining what happened to his younger sister, Daisy.

He said: "These two men approached my little sister. They asked her where she was from, she responded then my fiance, Fern, saw my little sisters' eyes go in the back of her head.

"She ran over and she was fainting, she was in and out of consciousness.

"My initial thought was I thought we were getting kidnapped. We got down on our knees, but our hands in the air and they just started hitting us.

"They were hitting my legs saying 'no more football, you won't play again'. At this point I thought there's no way these are police, or I don't know who they are, so I tried to run away. I feared for my life, for sure, all the way through it.

"They hit me a lot on the legs. It wasn't on my mind. I was in that much of a panic. Fear. Scared for my life."

Responding to claims he attempted to bribe police and asked "do you know who I am?", Maguire said: "No, for sure. As soon as I saw that statement, just ridiculous."

Maguire spent two nights in prison after the incident, but says he doesn't have anything to apologise for.

"It was horrible. It's not something I ever want to do again," Maguire said. "I don't wish it on anybody. It's the first time I've ever been inside a prison.

"I don't feel like I owe an apology to anybody. An apology is when you've done something wrong. Do I regret? I regret being in the situation, and I play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I regret putting the fans and club through this."
