Manchester United remain determined to sell Paul Pogba this summer - with his sale key to funding their transfer plans.
RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner was on Manchester United's shortlist of striker targets but the club will not rival Chelsea for his signature.
United's interest saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer meet with the Germany international earlier this year, says the Athletic, who claim the United boss flew to Berlin for talks.
During the meeting, Solskjaer reportedly made it clear a deal to bring Werner to Old Trafford would hinge on United finding a buyer for Pogba.
Interest from Real Madrid and Juventus in the France international has cooled in recent months with recent reports suggesting Pogba could now even sign a new deal with the club.
