Manchester United boss David Moyes has no doubts Wayne Rooney will go down as one of the game's greats.
Moyes was delighted to secure Rooney to a new, long-term deal earlier this year.
"Wayne is smiling, training well and I think he is enjoying his football.
"I think he's a great player. Older people will talk about other great players but younger people - like those in the media - will eventually look back and see Wayne as one of the great players they saw regularly, week in, week out.
"Of course, you see Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo on television playing in Spain.
"But I think Rooney will come into that category for the people who watch football in this country.
"The PFA have just nominated six players for their Player of the Year and Wayne is not in it.
"But that is probably more to do with the season Manchester United have had - we've not done so well this year.
"Wayne's early-season form was very good, then he got an injury around Christmas and that's also had as much to do with it as anything."
