Man Utd boss Mourinho on Derby shock: We failed to kill them off

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says they paid for not "killing the game" after their Carabao Cup shootout defeat to Derby County.

Derby won at Old Trafford 8-7 on penalties after the scores had finished level 2-2 after normal time.

Mourinho said afterwards: "We didn't score when we could. And we could in the first half. We had good situations to kill it.

"At half-time I repeat the same words as in the last match.

"They were playing quite well. We need to go and kill the game. Which we didn't.

"We couldn't be dominant in the beginning of the second half.

"I prefer not a reaction, I prefer to be proactive and go for it. We only go for it after the 1-1.

"With one man less, the reaction of pride and a group that didn't want to lose the game. Then the penalties come, somebody has to miss. When I saw after the sixth or seventh, I knew we would be in trouble.

"I don't think you are correct when I criticise the team.

"The opponent started better than us in the second half.

"The Carabao Cup is not the one we want. We are disappointed. The new rules, which I agree with, put the favourite team more in danger."
