Man Utd boss Ferguson: First title accelerated everything

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he didn't feel in total control at the club until he won that first League title.

"The first time I had control at this club was when we won the Premier League title," he recalled.

"Then I had achieved what I set out to achieve. I felt it would open the door.

"We made a leap forward in every department of the club because it had been a millstone around everyone's neck.

"We had not won it for 26 years and it was a burden, there is no doubt about it.

"The previous year we lost it to Leeds. We should have won the league that year but we ended up playing four games in six days and it cost us.

"But in adversity, some people thrive. This club thrives and we showed it the next year."
