Man Utd boss Ferguson: Criticism never unsettled Berbatov

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says Dimitar Berbatov's unshakeable self-belief has allowed him to handle the criticism he's copped since arriving at Old Trafford.

A bright start to the season has so far silenced those critics who were predicting a summer move away from Old Trafford for a player who tends to polarise opinions.

His sublimely-taken goal in the Community Shield victory over Chelsea was followed by a clinical finish against Newcastle United last Monday.

"He has great ability," said Ferguson. "As I have said time and time again, when we sign a player for a lot of money there's a big expectancy. When they are not performing to the level some think they should, it is shown in a big way.

"Last season I could point to a lot of games in which he played very, very well. He has got great talent and he remains here.

"Dimitar has great belief in himself, and when you have confidence in your ability and you can express it, then there is not a lot wrong with you."
