Manchester United are working hard to leapfrog rivals Arsenal and sign Lisandro Martinez.
The two Premier League clubs are being closely linked to the Ajax central defender.
United were interested in Martinez's teammate Jurrien Timber, but he has opted to stay at Ajax for another season.
According to the Mirror, United have now moved on to the 24-year-old Argentina international instead.
Arsenal had a bid of £25 million rejected by Ajax last week, which means either club will have to put in a substantially better offer to secure Martinez.
There is no indication of the player's preference, but both teams will play in the Europa League next season.
