Manchester United chiefs accept vice-chairman Ed Woodward needs to work away from the manager in charge.
The Daily Mail says a head of football will be appointed this summer to put some distance between Woodward and the new manager.
Current Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino and Paul Mitchell are the men expected to be asked to revive United; Mitchell being the current Head of Recruitment and Development at RB Leipzig, having formerly holding those roles Tottenham, Southampton and MK Dons.
United had been pushing to make the structural changes more rapidly but Jose Mourinho resisted, fearing yet another layer of bureaucracy would clog up what he already regarded as a slow and cumbersome club. He also feared yet another confusing voice would be added to the multitude of scouts who have input to transfers.
