Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has denied saying Barcelona captain Lionel Messi was undeserving of being crowned Ballon d'Or winner.

Quotes attributed to Aguero suggested the winner should come from a player featuring in the Champions League final.

"I don't like to speak out and clarify things but when words have been attributed to me that I never said, I have to," Aguero tweeted.

"Just so it's clear, and I've always said this, but as long as Messi continues to play, he deserves the Ballon d'Or."
