Man City star Yaya Toure: I thought it was Man Utd who wanted me

Yaya Toure has admitted that he was under the impression that Manchester United wanted to sign him back in 2010.

The Ivorian midfielder left Barcelona for Manchester for a fee of £24million just under six years ago but ended up in the Sky Blue of Man City and not the famous red of United.

"To be in this squad that is making history, it's unbelievable," Toure said.

"When I was at Barcelona and initially approached by Manchester City I thought it was Manchester United that wanted me.

"My agent had to tell me it was the team in the blue shirts.

"At the time Manchester United were putting Manchester City in the shadows. It was unbelievable. Manchester United is a big club and I respect that club a lot."

Despite ending up at the Etihad Stadium and not Old Trafford, 32-year-old Toure says his decision has been vindicated after winning two Premier League titles and a pair of cups (both the FA and League).

"It was a big challenge but I came because I knew they were going to succeed and we would win trophies, compete with the big clubs and with Manchester United," he continued.

"This was the king of club I wanted to have a story with and make history with. I made a good choice."
