Man City defender Stones: I'll fight for my place

John Stones has vowed to hit the ground running after a poor end to last season.

The Manchester City stopper's early form petered out towards the end of the campaign, despite City winning the treble.

"I think the last two months were frustrating, but any player not playing is frustrated," Stones said. "I had the mindset to keep fighting and fight for my place. Then it's down to the manager then to choose his side.

"You have to respect that. I wanted to come on and try to affect any game that I could when I came on, however many minutes I got. It's about the team and not about John Stones or whoever's playing.

"It's about the team and that's why we won four trophies last season. It shows the strength of the squad and the selflessness of the squad in that respect. That's why we were so successful."
