Man City defender Dias: Pep a club great even without Champions League title

Manchester City defender Ruben Dias insists manager Pep Guardiola will remain a great even if they fail to win the Champions League.

City meet PSG on Tuesday in a repeat of last season's semi-final that Guardiola's side won 4-1 on aggregate before losing the final to Chelsea.

"He's one of the best managers ever. What he has done, not only here but in Barcelona and Bayern Munich, is incredible," said Dias.

"People think that it is easy to manage at a top club, but it comes with challenges and the manager has been successful everywhere he's been.

"It's not just what he's won but his style of play. It's a pleasure to be part of it and he'll keep pushing us to keep winning trophies."

Dias says reaching the final last time can't be regarded as failure.

"Getting there was a huge moment – it was the first time in the club's history," he argues.

"Winning would have been incredible but it can only help us to have had that experience. To be that close gives you motivation to hopefully go one step further.

"It was the first time most of our squad had been in a Champions League final and that sort of experience is invaluable. We have been strong for a number of years now, it hasn't quite been enough, but last season we proved to ourselves that we can get to the very late stages. After that it's a one-off game.

"We had big moments last season, away at Dortmund, home and away against PSG. Ultimately only one team wins the Champions League every season and many strong teams miss out. The level is very high.

"The most important takeaway for us last season was that was we might not have won the competition, but we'd got further than we ever had in the past."
