Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany feels Europe's smaller leagues should come together in a new competition.
Kompany wants the idea of the BeNe League to be pursued.
"I look at the future of football completely differently. First and foremost, I think that the competitions of the small countries must unite," Kompany told Sporza.
"I do not understand why countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands do not go together and form a greater competition to create top European teams.
"It is ridiculous that we still speak of Anderlecht, Club Brugge and Standard. Competitively those clubs have the feeling that they cannot compete against Barcelona and Real Madrid.
"Also in Scandinavian countries, Austria, Switzerland, ... I do not understand that they are lagging behind with small leagues, who will never ever catch up with the power of the big leagues. I do not understand why they are not sitting around the table to once again bring distinguished toppers and subtoppers in Europe. If there is a story of a Super League at that moment, all those clubs are completely different."
