Man City boss Pellegrini defends Kompany selection

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini defended his selection of Vincent Kompany in defeat at Liverpool.

Pellegrini refused to blame skipper Vincent Kompany, despite the defender setting up the winning goal for Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho with a horrible sliced clearance.

Kompany was injured in a training ground fall on Saturday, but Pellegrini - who lost star midfielder Yaya Toure to a hamstring injury after just 19 minutes - said: "Football is about mistakes and good things and Liverpool won the game with a mistake.

"It's difficult to know how fit Kompany was, but he warmed up and was perfect to play. He played because he could play."
