Man City boss Guardiola: Rodri can become a football great

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says Rodri could be one of the game's greats.

Guardiola has told Rodri he can be one of the best holding midfielders to ever play the game if he continues to show the desire to improve at Manchester City.

The Spaniard has been in excellent form for the Blues this season and he was integral to City's stylish victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

"Sometimes the players come in one place and at the beginning start well after they are high and low. Sometimes when a player like him, so young 22, 23, he improves because he accepts what he has done," Guardiola said.

"He has the willingness to say I can do better, listen, not tell him 'you have to do it because I'm saying you have to do it.'

"He tries to understand why it's better to do this than that, where are the spaces defensively, offensively. When he has a willingness to improve and listen and say 'yeah, I can do it', like some periods he was not able to now he is able to do it. The results are there. Even his margins to improve is absolutely higher.

"Of course the last games he was magnificent, in terms of presence but with the ball as well. Not just an area for a holding midfielder who just defends, defends, defends.

"Still, I have the feeling he can improve, still he can make us play even better. We are here to help him, he is able to accept the challenge. He'll become an exceptional holding midfielder in all of history."
