Man City boss Guardiola hopes for Kompany to play on

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has hopes of Vincent Kompany playing on next season.

The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer and the emotion he showed after his stunning goal beat Leicester City just under two weeks ago and the wave to supporters at Brighton on Sunday have led to suggestions he could leave the club.

Asked if the FA Cup final against Watford today could be his final game for the club, Guardiola said: "Hopefully not.

"I don't know. We spoke with Vinny. We are going to speak after this game. But my words are unnecessary for what he has done over the last few weeks and his career.

"Vinny has shown again when he is fit what he is able to do. It is top. The problem is the period between November and February and March. We were losing quite often for that reason. When he is fit he is incredible."

Kompany could be in line for a fifth successive start for City today, his longest run in the side for two years, and Guardiola admits fitness is the only concern over his future and whether to offer him a new deal, with assurances of his playing time.

"He doesn't have to show me his ability. He has it. He is incredibly good. He is good enough. It is just being fit. That is the only reason," he said.
