Man City boss Guardiola: Barcelona should block Pedri from Olympics

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has urged Barcelona midfielder Pedri to snub the Olympics Games.

Pedri, currently with Spain at Euro 2020, has been selected by Spain for the Tokyo Games.

But Guardiola, quoted by AS, said: "I think that one competition in the summer is enough. (Lionel) Messi went to the Olympic Games (in 2008) because he had neither the World Cup nor the Copa America."

The City manager also confirmed he and the club blocked Ferran Torres and Rodri from being selected for the Olympics. Both players, like Pedri, are part of Spain's Euro 2020 squad. Their manager insisting playing in the senior tournament is enough for them this summer.

Guardiola continued: "Ferran Torres and Rodri could have gone to the Games and they don't go, but they've already gone to the Euro. It's too much. They should turn it down. We pay them very well and they serve the club.

"Going to the Euro is very good for them, they are doing very well."

With Barca last season, Pedri played a total of 52 club games. Including Spain U21 games, he's also played a total of 13 internationals ahead of Tuesday's Euro 2020 semifinal against Italy. He has started all five of La Roja's games so far this tournament.

Torres, meanwhile, played 36 games in total for Manchester City, while midfielder Rodri made 53 club appearances.
