Released Newcastle United academy player Mackenzie Heaney will continue his football in the non-leagues.

The Evening Chronicle says Heaney has joined Ebac Northern League Division One club Newcastle Benfield.

Heaney was released by the Magpies at the end of last season and spurned offers from higher up the league pyramid to join the Lions.

The attacking midfielder has represented England and Scotland at youth level and was tipped for a bright future at St James Park.

He signed a new deal in May 2017 but struggled to make an impact over the last 12 months.

He was linked with a move to Championship club Norwich City and spent a week on trial with the Canaries during last season.
