Luis Milla exclusive: I made the right decision leaving Barcelona for Real Madrid

Luis Milla believes he made the right choice to leave Barcelona for Real Madrid in his playing days.

Milla was an all action defensive midfielder in his heyday, starring for Barcelona between 1984-1990, having come through the youth setup at the club.

He did spend some time at Barcelona C and Barcelona B during those years.

But as he was entering his prime, Milla was lured away by the club's greatest rivals, Real Madrid.

The Spaniard was the subject of a bitter contract row with the board of directors and the club's manager, Johan Cruyff.

Rather than agree to the club's terms, he decided to pursue a free transfer to Real.

Despite suffering a serious injury in his first season at Real, Milla played for the club from 1990 to 1997 and won many honours.

As a player, he won La Liga once with Barcelona and twice with Real, along with a Copa del Rey at each club, the European Cup Winners' Cup at Barca and the Spanish Super Cup at Real.

Asked about his decision to leave Barcelona in an exclusive interview with Tribal Football, Milla said: "I never regretted leaving Barcelona. There comes a time when a player has to decide whether a change of club is the right thing to do and also look after his own interests and future.

"Of course, leaving one great club for another great club is never easy. However, I think I made the right decision.

"I spent seven great years at Real Madrid, winning Ligas and Copas with them.My contract was renewed 3 times there… so it really worked out well for me."
