Longstaff reveals motivation to stay at Newcastle

Newcastle United star Sean Longstaff has admitted his delight at breaking through to the first team this season.

The young midfielder faced many obstacles on the road to success, including academy coaches who did not believe he was good enough.

But he vowed to prove everyone wrong and show that he was good enough to make it at this level. Now he is attracting interest from the likes of Manchester United.

"The goal was always to try and stay, because I wanted to play for Newcastle United," Longstaff told Chronicle Live during an interview in early April.

"But it's funny because, when you're younger, you've always got an opinion of yourself. At the time the coaches didn't sort of see it the same, and it p***ed me off, but it was good for me to a degree as well, because it gave me the mentality of: 'I'm going to prove you wrong.'

"I remember thinking: 'I'm going to be the player who really kicks on, and I'm going to do everything I can to try and get in the first team.'

"Looking back now, I'm not sure if perhaps that conversation was a good thing. It annoyed me at the time, but it drove me on.

"It gave me the mindset that I had more people to prove wrong, and I've never been one of the people who some of the coaches spoke about as being one of those who would go on and play for the first team."
