Angelo Ogbonna's attempt at British humour has not worked out well as he was the subject of criticism from Italian fans.
The West Ham United defender posted on Twitter a photo of him standing in front of an iconic red phone box in London, accompanied by the caption: “Who knows if Mr Conte has my English number??!!"
Ogbonna was referring to his current standing in the Italian national team as he strives to force his way in to Anotnio Conte's squad for this summer's Euro2016 tournament.
But there has been some backlash from the gag, with some supporters suggesting the 27-year-old former Torino and Juventus centre-back has been disrespectful to Conte, prompting an explanation from the player himself.
“I had a go at British humour and used it as context, the player said, I don't really understand what's wrong," he told Sport Witness.
“The national team has a special place in my heart. Living far away from my country makes the desire even stronger."
