Tony Parkes hopes the success of Phil Jones will convince local youngsters to sign with Blackburn Rovers.
Parkes enjoyed a 34-year career at Rovers as player, coach and caretaker boss.
He told the Lancashire Telegraph: "It makes me laugh when you have young lads opting to sign schoolboy terms with Manchester United or Chelsea rather than going with their own club.
"More often than not it is their parents pushing for that so they can boast about their son playing for a 'big team'. I just wish local lads would go to their local clubs - it makes sense for everyone."
