LOAN PERFORMER OF THE WEEK: Newcastle youngster Ameobi off the mark as he aims for ’20-goal season’ with Cardiff

It took Sammy Ameobi just three minutes to make an impact for Cardiff City at the weekend, with the big man volleying home a superb goal moments after coming on as a substitute.

Ameobi replaced first half scorer Kenwyne Jones, who sustained an ankle injury, early in the second half.

The on-loan Magpies forward lashed home a fierce volley from inside the area, as Cardiff beat Wolves 2-0 to register their first win of the season, following a run of three straight draws.

23-year-old Ameobi was making just his second appearance for his new club, but judging by his performance in this cameo, could now be staking his claim for a starting spot under Russell Slade.

Having been deployed as a winger for much of his time at Newcastle, the 6ft 4 Ameobi looked right at home in the centre-forward position after coming on. If his 6ft 3 strike partner Jones can stay fit, the pair could potentially form England's most intimidating strike force.

The younger brother of former Toon favourite Shola is aiming high in Wales, having previously stated his desire to score 20 goals this season.

"There would be no point signing for Cardiff in the Championship and feeling I was too good," he said after signing for the Bluebirds in July.

“I want to push, I want to succeed and go back to Newcastle at the end of this season having scored 20 goals."

Manager Slade was pleased with his loanee's display, but also said it was “Just a glimpse of what he can do".

It will be interesting to see whether Slade deploys Ameobi as an out-and-out striker or on his previously favoured position on the wing. Whichever position Ameobi settles in, I certainly wouldn't want to be the defender coming up against him.
