Liverpool stunned as 68-match unbeaten Anfield run ended by Burnley

Liverpool's 68-match unbeaten Premier League run at Anfield has ended at the hands of Burnley.

The pressure was on Liverpool after Leicester City, Manchester United and Manchester City won their games this week.

But an 83rd minute penalty from Ashley Barnes might have ended Liverpool's chances of retaining the Premier League title.

It was a frustrating night for Jurgen Klopp's men as Sean Dyche set up his side in typically defensive fashion.

Things could have been completely different, however, had Divock Origi converted a one-on-one on the stroke of half-time.

An uncharacteristic mistake from Clarets captain Ben Mee allowed the Belgian plenty of time, but his effort cannoned off the bar.

Dyche's men wouldn't make the same mistake as they solidified the middle and welcomed a rain of crosses from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino were brought on, with the former quickly forcing a brilliant stop from Nick Pope.

All the attention was on Liverpool going for a winner, but it was Burnley who broke the deadlock.

The always tenacious Barnes won a spot-kick after getting his toe to the ball ahead of Alisson, before cooly slotting past the Brazilian from 12-yards out.

The final whistle blew on the match and potentially Liverpool's hopes of winning the Premier League title this season.

The Reds are now six points behind leaders Manchester United and will go seven points behind Manchester City if Pep Guardiola's men win their game.

Jurgen Klopp's men are also only two points ahead of sixth-placed Everton, who have two games in hand, and will need to find a remedy ahead of Sunday's FA Cup fourth-round tie with United.

They will then face Tottenham in their next league match, who they lead by one point, although Jose Mourinho's side have a game in hand.

On the other side, Burnley's first win a Anfield since 1974 could have massive ramifications on their relegation fight.

The Clarets are now seven points clear of 18th-placed Fulham at the midway point of the season.
