Liverpool legend Owen questions quality of England youth

Michael Owen believes England have just one or two promising youngsters in the national team setup.

The former Liverpool star has questioned whether or not Roy Hodgson has top quality youth to call on as the Three Lions begin preparations for Euro2016 in France this summer.

Owen identifies Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli, Everton's Ross Barkley and Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling as players with legitimate senior prospects but believes there is a shortage of inexperienced talent who are destined to become England regulars.

"I think Dele Alli is a real exciting one but when I look back to the last tournament (2014 World Cup), I was thinking we have got Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley, kids like that," he said on BT Sport.

"They didn't set the tournament alight. Have they improved since?

"You could argue Barkley has a bit, but I don't think it's the most exciting crop of youngsters. We have got one or two you are hanging you hat on but in previous generations we've had a lot more."
