Liverpool legend Gerrard: Beating Man Utd about winding them up

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard admits beating Mancheter United is also about winding them up.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5Live, Rangers boss Gerrard spoke about his experiences of the fixture and how kissing a TV camera became his trademark celebration when scoring there.

He said: "It's exciting, it's a fascinating match and it's the fixture you look for at the start of the season, home and away. It's the biggest game in Britain and one of the biggest games around the world.

"It just happened off the cuff. Of course, the game is always covered by the TV and I just remember sliding on my knees and getting carried away a bit. It's become a bit of a wind-up to the Mancunians because they gave me so much stick over the years.

"It's just to wind them up a bit, just a bit of banter between us.

"That's what you've always got to remember, it's the three points that are the key although it gets built up by the TV and everything, it's a tough fixture. Like Merseyside derbies, sometimes form can go out of the window."

Liverpool haven't won at Old Trafford since their 3-0 win in 2014, a game which Gerrard grabbed a brace.

The former Liverpool captain added: "I think Liverpool have been the better team over the last few years but even last season they only managed to get a draw and United were there for the taking.

"If Liverpool get that opportunity again, they've got to go for it and put their foot on the accelerator. This is a Man United side that isn't in form and have had their issues as you say.

"It won't be like this forever so you've got to strike when you have the chance."
