Liverpool hero Thommo enjoys swipe at Sir Alex after title triumph: I'll keep it clean

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson has enjoyed a dig at Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson as Reds fans celebrate winning the Premier League title today.

Manchester City's loss at Chelsea on Thursday night means Liverpool have an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League table, and have clinched their first top-flight title in 30 years.

Ferguson, who won 13 Premier Leagues with Manchester United, declared that his biggest achievement was "knocking Liverpool right off their f****** perch" after he helped United leapfrog the Reds in terms of overall domestic titles won.

United have won 20 in total, but Liverpool's success this season brings them up to 19, and they certainly look the more likely of the two teams to win more in the coming years.

Thompson couldn't resist bringing up Ferguson's comments up again: "We are back on our perch. It's been a long time coming.

"I didn't use the expletives that came before it, but we are back. It's been a long time coming.

"It's been a generation, 30 years. Yes we've had the Champions League, but for Liverpool it has always been about the championship. And we have not been able to get our hands on it. And it's been a burden to everybody.

"All our managers have had to carry it. And I think now, to Jurgen Klopp, the players, my utter congratulations because it has been hard. It has been the holy grail and we've done it tonight."
