Liverpool hero Danny Murphy says Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho was eager to land the Anfield job.

Murphy revealed on talkSPORT that Mourinho could've landed the Reds job ahead of Rafa Benitez.

"When Rafael Benitez joined Liverpool, the job stood between him and Mourinho. I know this is a fact.

"Mourinho really wanted the job.

"But Liverpool chose really Benitez, who he had won La Liga and the UEFA Cup with Valencia. He was considered a better bet than to bring in someone who then had just won in Portugal. I know that Mourinho was very disappointed."
