Liverpool great and former Middlesbrough star Graeme Souness has paid tribute to Jack Charlton after his passing on Saturday.
Charlton was Middlesbrough boss for four years between 1973 and 1977, and managed Souness during the early part of his career.
"I've got an enormous debt of gratitude to him," said Souness, speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the Premier League game between Sheffield United and Chelsea.
"He sorted me out as a young man when I was maybe too full of myself. He said there are two doors: one door might lead to a bit of success, and the other to fading away from the game."
Souness joined Middlesbrough in 1972, and made 176 appearances for the club before moving on to have a hugely successful time at Liverpool in 1978.
"On a personal level, you look back on your life, and you think if I hadn't met him at that time, I might not have gone on and played at the level I did."
