Liverpool great Steven Gerrard has spoken of his trial with Manchester United as a junior.
Gerrard, now Rangers manager, admits he played alongside United Treble hero Wes Brown.
“It was strange, really, because I had a lot of letters come in at the time to go and try different place. Everton, United, Palace, West Ham - to name a few," he said on The Greatest Game podcast.
"And I think my dad was maybe trying to push Liverpool in a roundabout way, looking back: 'What's going on here? Offer him [a contract], or what.'
“[Head of the youth academy] Steve Heighway said: 'Well look, if he wants to go and try those places, no problem.' I think Liverpool knew I was always going to stay there and Steve probably had lots of dads pushing him.
“But yeah, I just went and tried them because I wasn't signed up with any of them. I was on a one-year rolling contract at the time. I wanted to know what West Ham was like, I wanted to know what Everton and United was like compared to where I was. But I always knew I was going to stay at Liverpool long-term."
Gerrard went on to add that he wore a United strip for his trial, describing the club's away kit from 1992 to 1994: “We wore the green and yellow kit that was split in half, the Sharp one.
“I played in a game for them. Wes Brown was centre-back. I tried them all (different teams' kits)!"
