Liverpool defender Van Dijk released from Holland squad 'due to personal circumstances'

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been released from the Holland squad.

Van Dijk has withdrawn from the Netherlands squad "due to personal circumstances" the Dutch FA have confirmed.

The Reds star captained Oranje to a goalless draw in Northern Ireland on Saturday night as they secured their place in next summer's European championships.

Van Dijk was expected to play a part in Tuesday's game with Estonia but has now been released from his international commitments ahead of the return of Premier League football next week.

"National team coach Ronald Koeman cannot rely on Virgil van Dijk on Tuesday against Estonia," an official statement read.

"The captain of the Dutch national team has to let go of the game due to personal circumstances and has since left the Oranje training camp."
