Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan is to appear in court after being charged with assault.

The Mirror reports Flanagan will appear in court on Tuesday accused of common assault.

Flanagan, 25, was charged following an incident on Duke Street in Liverpool city centre around 3.20am on Friday December 22.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said Flanagan, from Cressington, Liverpool, was released on conditional bail to appear before the city's magistrates' court on January 2.

The Liverpool-born defender has made more than 50 first-team appearances for Liverpool FC since making his debut aged 18.
