Liverpool defender Joel Matip is adamant they're well placed in the title race.

Jurgen Klopp's men have taken 65 points from 26 games and are behind leaders Manchester City on goal difference having played a game fewer.

And Matip, speaking to the official Liverpool matchday programme, said: "If somebody had told us that we would be standing in this position, we would have taken it. Now we have to stay positive and I think we certainly have plenty of reasons to do so.

"As a group, I think we have made an improvement and the more time we have had together working as a unit has helped.

"Of course we defend as a whole team starting from the attacking line with their pressing, which helps us in the defensive line as well.

"We have a lot of quality throughout the team and particularly in the centre of defence.

"It's nice to be in a team like this but then you have to fight for your place. That is normal. If you have a lot of quality and big competition it helps to make everyone better."
