Liverpool defender Joel Matip's season is over due to injury.

Matip will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury he picked up in the Merseyside derby at Everton.

He said: "This season I will be not back on the pitch but for next season, I hope I'm going to be quite early a direct help for the team."

Matip has endured an injury-hit campaign which has restricted him to just 13 appearances in all competitions.

He was out for three months with a knee problem between October and January and has played only nine times in the Reds' title-winning Premier League season.
