Liverpool create history as Salah scores brace in four-goal thrashing of Man Utd

Liverpool have produced a stunning 4-0 win over Manchester United to go top of the Premier League.

The Reds are now two points ahead of Manchester City, although Pep Guardiola's side can regain the ascendency with a win over Brighton on Wednesday.

Luis Diaz put Liverpool ahead after just five minutes, the Colombian sweeping home a pass from Mohamed Salah.

Cristiano Ronaldo was absent from the match after the death of his new-born son and both sets of supporters paid tribute in the seventh minute with a touching applause.

Salah then ended his eight-match goalless run after converting a brilliant pass from Sadio Mane.

The goal followed a beautiful sequence of passing around the United deep block, with Mane's curling lofted assist allowing Salah to finish past David De Gea.

Mane got in on the act himself after 68 minutes to put the game beyond doubt, finishing first time after a pass from Diaz.

Salah sealed a famous victory at Anfield with five minutes remaining.

After the 5-0 win at Old Trafford in October, Liverpool are the first club to score at least eight Premier League goals against United in a single season.

Jurgen Klopp's side next take on local rivals Everton on Sunday, while United face Arsenal at the Emirates.

The Red Devils remain three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, who also have a game in hand.
