Liverpool boss Klopp adds Phillips, Rhys Williams to Champions League squad

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has added two young defenders to his squad for their Champions League clash at Ajax.

Young defenders Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams are set to travel with the Liverpool squad to Amsterdam for Wednesday's Champions League group stage opener at Ajax.

The Reds short of defensive cover following the potentially season-ending injury suffered by Virgil van Dijk in Saturday's Merseyside derby draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Joel Matip, who started that game, will miss the trip to Amsterdam as a precaution as Klopp seeks to protect him for the hectic schedule ahead, while Thiago Alcantara will also miss the trip after being on the receiving end of a heavy challenge from Richarlison towards the end of the derby.

The Brazilian forward was sent off for the tackle, and Thiago was sent to hospital for a scan on his knee after limping away from Goodison Park.
