Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez must sell in January if he wants to buy during the winter market transfer window.
The Sunday Times says Benitez will have to sell before he buys in the January window as Liverpool's finances remain dangerously stretched - the American co-owners have failed in their efforts to attract new investment - and serious doubts continue about the manager's effectiveness in the transfer market.
Co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have been unimpressed with elements of Benitez's player-trading strategy, a consistent source of conflict at Anfield.
The Spaniard has been forced to fight for permission to make any signings in the new year, eventually achieving a compromise position enabling him to fund purchases out of sales.
