Liverpool boss Benitez: Benayoun says it was penalty

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is convinced they deserved a penalty in yesterday's 0-0 draw at Manchester City.

Vincent Kompany clashed with Yossi Benayoun, who was making his own return after seven weeks on the sidelines with a fractured rib.

A penalty would have been harsh, though the Kop boss feels it could have been a different decision had the Israeli international gone to ground.

He declared: "I asked Yossi and he said he thought it was.

"I think he was trying to stay on his feet and you cannot blame the players. Sometimes it's not clear.

"That could have been a big difference. But it's not going to change anything now and at least with players coming back from injury, it gives us options and competition for places."
