Xherdan Shaqiri has revealed he turned down Everton before joining Liverpool last summer.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's Merseyside derby, he told how a move to Goodison Park was mooted while he was still at Stoke, adding that he didn't even entertain the idea of joining the blue half of the city.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “It's my first derby so it's going to be very special.

“I want to see and to feel the atmospheres in these derbies. I'm looking forward to it.

“I know just one Evertonian. He said to me when I was at Stoke, 'You have to come to Everton .' I said, 'No!'"
