Jesse Marsch has admitted Leeds United are still a work in progress after Thursday's win over Brisbane Roar in Gold Coast.
In their first match in Australia, the Whites ran out 2-1 winners at the Cbus Super Stadium.
Joe Gelhardt and Daniel James scored for the Premier League side, who almost settled for a draw against a brave Roar outfit.
Asked about the preseason progress, Marsch told reporters: "I think it's been important.
"We enjoyed last year but it was stressful. We stayed clam and that was a big reason that we were able to do well. There was some good moments tonight and things we need to work on."
Marsch made a number of changes throughout the match, with some players featuring for just 30 minutes.
When quizzed about his strategy, Marsch replied: "We'll be looking to build fitness and sharpness and clarity in every way. "We're trying to give everyone time on the pitch."
Kristoffer Klaesson played 90 minutes in goals, but Marsch has no doubt that Illan Meslier will be his number one shot-stopper.
"Illan [Meslier] is our number one keeper," Marsch said. "He's a big player for us and he will be ready for us against [Aston] Villa."
Leeds play Villa at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Sunday.
