Lippi thrilled with Guangzhou Evergrande's unexpected trump

Guangzhou Evergrande boss Marcello Lippi couldn't believe his side had won so easily in their Asian Champions League Round of 16 first leg on Tuesday night.

The acting Chinese Super League and Asian champions hammered Cerezo Osaka 5-1 in Japan to all but book their spot in the quarter-finals of the continent's premier club competition.

Two goals each from Brazilian pair Muriqui and Elkeson, and a late fifth from Gao Lin, gave Evergrande a comfortable victory which was certainly not expected by their Italian boss.

"This is a delightful win for us, even though we were not expecting to win by such a large margin," said Lippi.

"Our team is getting back to find the good conditions we had last year, and I am expecting that we can take the coming games with good confidence."

Lippi's side, who have won six matches in a row in all competitions, are currently sitting on top of the Chinese league table with nine wins and a loss from their 10 outings.
