Levante shock Atletico Madrid as Melero produces winner

Levante stunned Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday night.

Levante dominated the ball early on, much to the surprise of many watching on in Madrid, but had little to show for their superiority, and there weren't too many chances at either end in the first half. Thomas Lemar did have a big opportunity in stoppage time though, but he was unable to find the target as he sent his shot over the crossbar.

Ten minutes after the restart, Atleti had a mountain to climb. The champions' defensive problems worsened as Gonzalo Melero was on hand to finish, slipping in at Jan Oblak's near post after being found by Real Madrid product Jorge de Frutos.

To their credit, Atleti did react and pushed forward immediately. They were awarded a penalty only for it to be overturned as Marcos Llorente had been offside earlier in the move. Although Atletico looked to stay on top, they nearly found themselves with a two-goal deficit to overturn but Oblak denied De Frutos.

Simeone's side continued to search for an equaliser but were unable to find their way through Levante's backline.
