Leicester City and Southampton were among the teams that failed to sign Djed Spence on deadline day.
According to The Northern Echo, officials at Middlesbrough received several offers for the full-back in the last hours of the transfer window on Tuesday.
However, the club focused on an offer from fellow Championship outfit Nottingham Forest for Spence as the window drew to a close.
The clubs eventually agreed on a season-long loan deal, which has infuriated Boro fans.
Many were confused as to why a player who was nearly ever present last term was loaned out.
Both Leicester and the Saints did make offers for Spence, but they may not have been able to offer him as much game time as Forest.
