Leeds fans wouldn't forgive Phillips if he joined Man Utd - Mills

Former Leeds United star Danny Mils thinks Kalvin Phillips would ruin his relationship with the fans if he joined Manchester United.

A Leeds academy graduate, Phillips has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.

And Mills warned the 26-year-old that he risks souring his relationship with the Leeds faithful if he joined United.

"Will it ruin his relationship [with Leeds fans]? Without a shadow of a doubt," Phillips told Football Insider.

"People will say, 'It won't happen, it can't happen'. Well, it has happened in the past. Rio [Ferdinand] did it. He was only there for a year but Leeds gave him his big break, Manchester United came in and he moved on and went on to much bigger and better things.

"Alan Smith did it. The club was in a dire financial situation at the time but Smithy was die-hard Leeds. He had come through the system, not too dissimilar to Kalvin. He was a Leeds lad, a Leeds fan. People will say it's different because he was from Rothwell, really? He was still a Leeds fan.

"As much as Leeds fans will hate it and hate me saying it if Man United come in for him and Erik ten Hag is building something new with him as one of the key players, it would be very, very difficult for him not to look at that opportunity. If you are offered the opportunity I don't think you can't look at it.

"That's where it becomes very difficult. If Man United bring in Ten Hag there's every chance they can build for the future around Kalvin.

"Leeds fans will say they are building something. It will take Leeds a lot longer to get to the Champions League places and win those big trophies than it will for Man United."
