Leeds United are edging closer to signing Newcastle United midfielder Alan Smith.

The Daily Mail says Leeds have stepped up their bid to re-sign Smith by enquiring what wages the former England international would accept to return to Elland Road.

The 30-year-old has a year remaining on his £60,000-per-week contract at Newcastle but has been told he can leave.

Smith is also interesting West Ham United.
