Leeds ahead of Man City in race for Espanyol forward Mateo Joseph Fernandez

Liverpool and Leeds are keen on Spanish teenager Mateo Joseph Fernandez.

Espanyol forward Fernandez was born in Spain but his family are English and he qualifies for both countries, says the Daily Mail.

The 17-year-old striker, who turns 18 this month, has also attracted interest from Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester City and is understood to have a £1.2million release clause in his contract which runs until next summer.

Leeds have discussed an offer below the release clause and there is growing confidence a compromise can be reached for January with his family ready to move to England to be with him once terms are agreed.

Nevertheless, Manchester City are eager to stop the youngster from signing with Leeds as they believe his physicality and natural ability will suit the club's playing style.
