Lee Clark Exclusive: I would've won promotion at Huddersfield

Lee Clark is adamant Huddersfield Town would have won promoted under his leadership.

At the age of 36, Clark left his role as assistant at Norwich City to become manager of Huddersfield in December 2008.

A ninth-placed finish in his debut season was backed up by a League One play-off semi final loss to Millwall.

It went from strength and strength the following season with Clark's side breaking a Football League record of 43 games unbeaten.

However, Huddersfield fell five points short of automatic promotion and lost to Peterborough in the play-off final on penalties.

The West Yorkshire club were on course to make their third straight play-offs under Clark before he was dismissed in February 2012.

Despite his side sitting fourth on the table, owner Dean Hoyle felt it was time for a change and sacked Clark after a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United.

Simon Grayson replaced Clark and was able to steer Huddersfield into the Championship by beating the Blades on penalties in the play-off final.

Asked by Tribalfootball if he would have secured a similar fate had he not been sacked, Clark said: "Yeah 100 per cent. I believe we might've needed the playoffs that they ended up going through on penalties. I've had people say it's about being a good manager but also about being a lucky manager.

"So the previous year we got to the semi-final final, and we got hit with a couple of quick goals against Peterborough and lost the final the year after in quite an even game after beating Bournemouth on penalties.

"But we were in a great position, fourth in the league, when I left in February time and I certainly believe we could've got up and probably would've got up in automatic promotion, if not definitely through the playoffs."
