Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi says defeat to SPAL was a wake-up call his players needed.
Andrea Petagna scored a last minute penalty to earn the minnows the points.
“We had a few good chances, despite SPAL putting in a very good performance. Ciro Immobile hit the post and we should've done better on an Adam Marusic chance," Inzaghi told Radio Rai.
“It was a game that should've ended in a stalemate, but that penalty incident really damaged us. It was particularly galling, because there was a push on Lucas Leiva when he nearly scored and that could've been a penalty too.
“SPAL played the way we expected them to and didn't create particularly big problems for us. We weren't decisive enough in front of goal and weren't clinical. I hope this will serve as a lesson.
“The hunt for a Champions League place continues."
