Laporta: Barcelona board tearing down academy

Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta has slammed the board over their treatment of the academy.

Laporta is happy to see Sergi Roberto making his way, but believes more should be given their chance.

"I'm really happy for Sergi. We're talking about the most important incorporation that Barça have had. He's a sensational player with a great career ahead of him. He started with us, so I've known him since he was little. I would highlight the patience he's had to show to triumph at the best club in the world. He's done it like Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets, knowing he had to wait for his moment. I'm delighted for him."

However, he lamented the state of the academy. "The board's current policies have completely disregarded the cantera. This board is dismantling the cantera. They've gone for another style, looking at the transfer market, but this could end up costing them. You have to prepare for the Barcelona of the future. It's the moment for the youngsters from the academy to begin to learn from the cracks, but that's not the case. It's a shame not to indulge the factory of dreams which is La Masia. If more Sergi Roberto's had been brought through, now we wouldn't have a problem."
